For decades the Filipino has wallowed in separations that denied them the right and freedom to remarry because of the inadequacy of the legal separation law. Let us press on and demand passage of this law in the House and in the Senate floors. We need relevant laws that protect us all. Click here

We have annullment, why do we need divorce?

Divorce is only an abuse of the sacrament of matrimony.

I would not like the Philippines to be like hollywood, marry and divorce 1 week later. (e.g. britney spears)

The Divorce Bill will protect the abused and abandoned spouse - and give her/him the freedom to remarry and have a second chance to be happy. The logic that "why did they marry in the first place" is myopic and condemning, as no one knows what will happen to a person (or marriage) after some years. We all marry with good intentions and expectant hope, but people change and become unfaithful or violent later in a marriage. To stick to a marriage for the sake of the law, all the while being beaten up and physically, emotionally, and psychologically drained, is like sentencing a person to life imprisonment & torture. Pass this law for the sake of all who need a new lease on life & love.

People who say that the Divorce Bill will "destroy" families and ruin the children's lives do not really understand how it is to live in a marriage where one partner refuses to do his part and BE RESPONSIBLE for the family. Many marriages fail because basically, let's admit it, Filipino men are spoiled by their mothers and so they grow up selfish and immature, unable to take the leadership role in caring and being responsible for their families. They like to have their cake and eat it too. They want a marriage where the wife is a martyr, sacrificing everything just to make HIM happy, while he drinks & gambles, makes merry with "barkada" collects his women like cards, and imagines himself as "macho" for being such an attractive (yak) creature. The family wallows in poverty and want, children out of school, or have gone into drugs or go into teen marriages - to escape the already "broken home" that tries to exist under the pretense of what the Catholic Church says is a "marriage". Hypocrisy.

The Bishops and priests argue that there is no need for the Divorce Bill since there is already an existing law - Legal Separation Law. The problem with legal separation is this - the couple may separate, physically and their properties divided accordingly, BUT this law does not allow them to remarry. The Divorce Bill is final and absolute and cuts the marriage as finished. The divorced couple can remarry without legal impediments - a right that is recognized all over the world. I say we as citizens of the Republic, deserve to have that right to remarry and have a second chance at happiness. We demand that right NOW.

I still dont understand divorce, If you say its primarily intended for abuse, I do not see why not legal separation law can take care of it.

If you argue the principle behind annullment that they should have not married in the first place because they are immature/not ready/or incapable to handle marriage is condemming. Then what can you say about divorce letting those people commit the same mistake by allowing them to marry again?
